New Affordable Housing Project in Edmonton

In a significant move for Edmonton’s downtown, Beljan Developments is converting the former YMCA building into affordable housing, backed by the city’s Affordable Housing Investment Program grant. This initiative addresses the pressing need for more accessible housing options in the city.

Mayor Amarjeet Sohi emphasized the city’s critical housing shortage and the necessity for diverse housing solutions. The project, named Williams Hall, will provide 90 apartments at reduced rates, targeting low-income young adults. This development is part of a broader city effort, involving various stakeholders, to increase affordable living spaces.

Beljan Developments began repurposing the old YMCA in early 2018, but plans were delayed due to the pandemic. The downturn in downtown conditions and the nationwide focus on affordable housing spurred the decision to transform Williams Hall into a part of the solution for these issues.

The planned facility will not only offer residential spaces but also include community and co-working areas, maintaining some historical elements of the YMCA. The project aligns with Edmonton’s goal to create 2,700 new affordable housing units by 2026.

Other entities like Leston Holdings and Jasper Place Wellness Centre also received grants for similar projects, contributing to the city’s affordable housing efforts. However, as Murray Soroka of Jasper Place Wellness Centre pointed out, the need far exceeds the current provisions, calling for a collective effort from all sectors of the community.

The Affordable Housing Investment Program is a significant part of Edmonton’s strategy to combat the housing crisis, demonstrating the positive societal impacts of stable and affordable housing.
